There’s nothing quite as comforting as a plate of tender, juicy meatballs smothered in a rich onion gravy. This recipe is perfect for cozy family dinners or when you just need a hearty, satisfying meal. Serve these meatballs over creamy mashed potatoes or buttery egg noodles for the ultimate comfort food experience.

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

1 lb (500g) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork

1 small onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)

For the Onion Gravy:

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups beef stock (or chicken stock)

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Meatballs

1. In a large bowl, combine ground meat, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix well until everything is evenly incorporated.

2. Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about the size of a golf ball.

3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then transfer them to a plate. (They don’t need to be fully cooked at this stage.)

Step 2: Make the Onion Gravy

1. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden and caramelized (about 10-12 minutes).

2. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

3. Gradually pour in the beef stock while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 3: Combine and Cook

1. Return the browned meatballs to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon some gravy over the meatballs to coat them.

2. Cover the skillet and let everything simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the gravy thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

3. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

Serve the meatballs and gravy hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or even rice. Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color, if desired.

Tips:

Want extra flavor? Add a pinch of paprika or thyme to the gravy.

These meatballs freeze well, so make a double batch and save some for later!

Enjoy this heartwarming dish that’s guaranteed to make everyone at the table smile.
